• Acute constipation
  • Bloating

Since 1970, in Switzerland, as an approved medicine, PADMA LAX is mixed according to the principle of Tibetan Medicine from twelve herbs and three minerals manufactured as laxative. PADMA LAX can be taken short-term (1-2 weeks) or on a trip for relief from acute constipation. Constipation can be caused by low fluid intake, unfavorable or unfamiliar food, stress, and a lack of exercise (during bed rest).

PADMA LAX can be applied during illnesses and circumstances that require soft bowel movements (e.g., hemorrhoids). The recipe has a mild (one tablet daily) or stronger (2 tablets daily) laxative effect. This occurs usually after a delay of about 8 hours. It stimulates the digestive functions in the entire digestive tract and reduces bloating.

PADMA LAX is available in Switzerland in packs of 20 tablets, without prescription, in pharmacies and drugstores.

In accordance with the principles of Tibetan Medicine, the composition of PADMA LAX comprises major and minor components. The individual components in the mixture are low doses and achieve their therapeutic effect in a way that is mutually complementary and reinforcing.

The valuable medicinal plants and minerals in PADMA LAX are described in the literature with these effects:

  • 1.8-Dihydroxy-anthracenderivate containing plants (dry extract of Aloe, Buckthorn bark, Cascara rind, and rhubarb root): They have a laxative effect, which comes through two mechanisms. On one hand, they affect colon movement (peristalsis), and on the other hand, they stimulate the active secretion of chloride ions in the intestinal lumen, which increases the water in the bowel contents. This leads to faster motility and a softer stool.
  • Essential oils containing plants (ginger root, indian long pepper): They are antispasmodic and work against flatulence (carminative).
  • Bitter substances containing herbs and seeds (colombo root, condurango rind, gentian root, inula, vomica seeds): The bitter substances stimulate the production of gastric juices, support digestive processes in the stomach and in the small intestine, and stimulate the liver.
  • Sodium sulfate: Attracts water and acts as an osmotic laxative.

One tablet contains: aloes dry extract 12.5 mg, standardised to 2.4-2.6 mg hydroxyanthracene derivatives (solvent: water), the powder of calumba root 10mg; cascara 52.5mg, chebulic myrobalan fruit 35mg, condurango 10 mg, elecampane 35 mg, frangula bark 52.5 mg, gentian root 35 mg, ginger 70 mg, heavy kaolin 25 mg, long pepper 3.5 mg, nux vomica 1.75 mg, rhubarb 70 mg, sodium hydrogen carbonate 15 mg, sodium sulphate 35 mg, with excipients.

Adults take 1-2 pills with plenty of liquid (minimum 1 glass of warm water) before going to bed or 1 hour before breakfast. Children 12 years of age take 1 tablet. Children under 12 years should be given PADMA LAX only on doctor’s orders.

The laxative effect is mild (1 tablet) to stronger (2 tablets) and has a delayed effect of ca. 8 hours. Therefore, it is recommended to take it in the evening.

PADMA LAX does not contain lactose and is gluten-free. 1 Tablet contains approximately 0.09 g available carbohydrates and is suitable for diabetics.

Acute constipation is not defined by the frequency of bowel movements. A normal bowel movement can be three times daily up to three times a week. One speaks of constipation, when the bowel movement is less frequent than three times a week and is difficult. Further is constipation marked by hard feces, pain during bowel movement, tension in the lower abdomen, and a bloated belly.

Most of the time, decreased bowel movement frequency is the consequence of a low fiber nutrition, not enough liquid intake, or a lack of exercise. In the elderly, all factors are often coming together. For chronic constipation (e.g., in case of constipation-dominant irritable bowel syndrome) laxatives should not be used longer than 14 days without medical supervision.

These measures can counteract acute constipation or prevent it. Food should be chewed well. This leads to stimulation of saliva and all digestive juices. This positive effect on the digestive system can be strengthened by bitter substances, which are in PADMA LAX or foods like chicory and radishes. The diet should also be rich in fiber (fruits, vegetables, whole grains).

The digestion and intestinal motility can be supported by sufficient intake of liquids and physical activity, for example, exercising the body core, pelvic floor muscle training, and climbing stairs, walking, swimming, or biking will stimulate intestinal activity. Abdominal massages (light touching in a clockwise direction around the navel) can bring on relief of pressure and bloating feeling.
